We're about to switch from suit and dress mode to spandex,
as we head from Vancouver (where we lectured at the American Roentgen Ray
Society meeting) to Miyazaki, Japan. We're packing up our fancy clothes to ship
back to Boston, and will be taking our bike gear, handlebar GPS units, and
computers on our flight to Japan.
This is definitely a journey into the unknown for us, and
we're full of questions. We boxed and shipped our bikes from Boston to a bike
store in Miyazaki, but will they be there and reassembled when we arrive? We
speak no Japanese and we've been told that we won't find many English speakers
outside of the big cities, so how will we figure out where we are, where to
head, what we're eating, etc.? We know the terrain in Japan is very hilly, but
we have no idea how well graded the roads are, so will we be pushing our
pack-laden bikes up steep mountain roads? Will we have to sleep on the floor? Will
they have chocolate-covered caramel bars? How will we survive a month without
bagels?
